Microbial pathogenesis: Lipid rafts as pathogen portals
نویسندگان
چکیده
The route of initial entry influences how host cells respond to intracellular pathogens. Recent studies have demonstrated that a wide variety of pathogens target lipid microdomains in host cell membranes, known as lipid rafts, to enter host cells as an infectious strategy.

Involvement of glycosphingolipid-enriched lipid rafts in inflammatory responses.
Glycosphingolipids (GSLs) are membrane components consisting of hydrophobic ceramide and hydrophilic sugar moieties. GSLs cluster with cholesterol in cell membranes to form GSL-enriched lipid rafts. Biochemical analyses have demonstrated that GSL-enriched lipid rafts contain several kinds of transducer molecules, including Src family kinases. Among the GSLs, lactosylceramide (LacCer, CDw17) can...
متن کاملLipid Rafts and Alzheimer’s Disease: Protein-Lipid Interactions and Perturbation of Signaling
Lipid rafts are membrane domains, more ordered than the bulk membrane and enriched in cholesterol and sphingolipids. They represent a platform for protein-lipid and protein-protein interactions and for cellular signaling events. In addition to their normal functions, including membrane trafficking, ligand binding (including viruses), axonal development and maintenance of synaptic integrity, raf...
متن کاملLocalization of phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate to lipid rafts and uroids in the human protozoan parasite Entamoeba histolytica.
Entamoeba histolytica is an intestinal protozoan parasite and is the causative agent of amoebiasis. During invasive infection, highly motile amoebae destroy the colonic epithelium, enter the blood circulation, and disseminate to other organs such as liver, causing liver abscess. Motility is a key factor in E. histolytica pathogenesis, and this process relies on a dynamic actomyosin cytoskeleton...
متن کاملLipid rafts involvement in the pathogenesis of Parkinson's disease.
Parkinson's disease (PD) is one of the most common neurodegenerative diseases affecting an increasing number of people worldwide with the aging society. Although the etiology of PD remains largely unknown, it is now clear that genetic factors contribute to the pathogenesis of the disease. Recently, several causative genes have been identified in mendelian forms of PD. Growing evidence indicates...
متن کاملLipid Raft in Cardiac Health and Disease
Lipid rafts are sphingolipid and cholesterol rich micro-domains of the plasma membrane that coordinate and regulate varieties of signaling processes. Lipid rafts are also present in cardiac myocytes and are enriched in signaling molecules and ion channel regulatory proteins. Lipid rafts are receiving increasing attention as cellular organelles contributing to the pathogenesis of several structu...
